Packaging material data model

The Packaging material data model development project of GS1 Finland will develop an operating model for identification and a data model for basic packaging data, which will allow packaging components to be identified and their data to be managed consistently throughout the supply chain, utilizing GS1 standards.

In the development project, the operating model and data structure developed in the Data model of raw material master data project is applied for the identification of packaging components and the management of packaging material data. The project aims to improve the consistency and usability of packaging data throughout the supply chain. The project, which is being implemented together with food industry, grocery companies and packaging industry players, is part of the GS1 Finland´s Interoperable traceability program.

In the project, a model is created that allows product packaging to be individualized and its batches to be identified using the GTIN code and application identifiers, and enables linking the individualized packaging to the basic information about it using the data fields of the GDSN product data standard. Based on selected examples, the attributes and practices for reporting information that are key to the traceability of packaging will be defined. In addition, the data model work will apply the basis created in the Data model of food sustainability project for packaging materials, and instructions will be prepared for the example packages for storing data in registers.
